Get messy, give back at Detroit Dye House’s Sole Project Sundays! Dive headfirst into a world of color while together we make something beautiful for someone who needs it. Each of these free sessions will focus on a specific design aspect of tie-dye and a different item to work with that will be donated, exploring the idea of how design changes when we create for someone else, and how beauty can transform the functional into something powerfully positive.
Sunday, September 11th- The item being created is a hand-sewn, super soft beanie to be gifted to patients and staff at Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s Oncology Dept. The design focus is color- the rainbow, basic theory, and ultimately how colors can make us feel.
Sunday, September 18th - The item being created is socks, the namesake of our Sole Project! In our Dye Class 101 sessions, each participant makes an item to be given away, which most frequently is a pair of socks for Detroit’s unhoused community. The socks made in this session will be donated to Crossroads of Michigan, with a design focus on the classic twists and binds of tie dye.
Sunday, September 25th- This session is all about our four-legged friends, as we make bandanas for the rescue dogs at Happy Paws Haven Animal Rescue! Participants are also asked to bring gently used towels and rags to dye as well for the shelter to use. We will be focusing on the special technique of ice-dyeing.
Sessions are free, but participants are asked to please RSVP in advance for accurate supply count and set-up. Sessions are open from 1-3 PM, and are drop-in style. Each participant will receive a commemorative t-shirt and light refreshments will be available. Come to one session, or all three!
