Influenced by the techniques of traditional tie-dye, brightlytwisted is dedicated to maintaining originality within the constructs of an increasingly manufactured world. At the root of our practice is the commitment to ensuring that each piece remains a unique & fresh idea, an abstract look at color, and a distinctive work of art.
The brainchild of born-and-bred Michigan artists, brightlytwisted offers a curated mix of contemporary women’s clothing, accessories, and home décor. While our dyed-by-hand creations are decisively modern and upscale, the brand’s origin is of a humbler, more organic nature.
It began as the labor-intensive pursuit of a preschool teacher. Self-taught in the art of hand-dyeing, Greg Stemas spent nine years operating brightlytwisted out of his basement, before joining forces with fellow educator Tammy Bourque in 2006.
The brand gained momentum throughout the art fair circuit in the early 2000s as we introduced high-quality, trend-conscious garments with more subdued color combinations and patterns. Our quirky-yet-sophisticated tie-dye tent engaged those who visited us each summer and, with their support, our young business rapidly gained popularity throughout Metro Detroit. Our unique product –a manifestation of our business philosophy– was a novel concept in the fashion industry: one-of-a-kind, wearable works of art- without couture-level price tags.
Over the years we have refined our technique and, blending together Greg’s years of design-and-dye experience with Tammy’s retail background, developed an innovative and [uncommonly pretty] approach to a timeless craft: colors twisted, pinched, and folded into designs on fine canvases of viscose, rayon, modal, velvet, bamboo, and silk.
In 2008, brightlytwisted developed a wholesale scarf line, and our fusion of art & industry began to grow into a nationally recognized brand. Initially launched after a serendipitous meeting with a national sales rep, Monica Barthelotti of Aqua Showroom, whose foresight propelled our brand even further, brightlytwisted’s collection can now be found in over 400 boutiques and department stores globally, including esteemed retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Free People, Piperlime, Sundance Catalog, Cusp, and Intermix.
brightlytwisted is more than a title for a slightly enigmatic design-and-dye company, its application as a kind of philosophical attitude spans from lifestyle choices to business practices. It is the conscious choice to live in color; to embrace the so-called chaos of what that entails by surrendering ourselves to that which we cannot control…
