As we celebrate the launch of the 2020 Comfort Collection, I am struck by the wise reminder that, “if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.”

I never had aspirations to be a “designer.” Designing clothes began as a means to an end during a time when brightlytwisted was in the early throws of producing our signature pashmina scarves. Only a few months into wholesale business, a deal with Nordstrom department store turned our hand-dyed scarves into a national brand; opening opportunities, visibility, and new ideas born from moments of pure exhilaration and ambition. Designing apparel was not a dream of mine, it was a means to an end. I just needed new things to dye. Taking more creative ownership over our line turned out to be a profoundly empowering turning point not just for myself as an artist, but for the brightlytwisted brand as a whole. I didn’t need the Universe to give me what I wanted — I needed to learn enough to give myself, and my business, what we needed.

It has been a decade since I was indoctrinated into the world of sewing. I have met an army of women in that time, all self-employed with exceptional drive and skill. I’ve had the privilege of learning more about my own business from local tailors, bridal designers, costume makers — not to mention the ins-and-outs of manufacturing in LA with some of the big wigs in fashion — and small batch manufacturing, where personal relationships with the makers heavily impact the quality of our product. These relationships and the knowledge I have gained through them, have taken the brightlytwisted brand to places I never anticipated.

The impact of brightlytwisted is also in the giving. From the beginning, we have pursued new ways to give more of ourselves in producing the highest quality goods, on the most comfortably-fitting silhouettes, in the coziest of fabrics — all with the intention of offering the simplest, most easily accessed comfort at a time when its need is undeniable. We created the 2020 Comfort Collection in part as a means to share our resources with those in need of extra support. With each item sold from the Comfort Collection, as a part of the initiative we are dubbing “The Comfort Project,” we will donate a mask to essential and vulnerable members of our community most in need.
